Trouble in Russia for scientists trying to mine cryptocurrencies at nuclear lab

Russian scientists have been arrested at the Russian Federal Nuclear Center in Sarov (a former Soviet military base located in a clandestine and previously unmarked city) for trying to use powerful, government-owned computers to “so-called” mine cryptocurrencies like bitcoin.

According to reports, this was not the first group of individuals who had had similar intentions to use a former military base for purported mining activities. However, they were the first to have taken the steps to do so.

The computer was offline in the setup phase of the mining operation but as soon as it was brought online to start mining, security individuals onsite were notified and immediately suspended all online activity of the computer.

This Cointelegraph article states that even though Russia does have intentions to make bitcoin legal tender, the engineers have been arrested and are facing criminal charges.
